Ash Wednesday Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes will be observed at noon and 6 p.m. in the church.
The Lenten programs will start on February 13th and on for five weeks. We will begin with a soup supper at 6 p.m., followed by study and discussion, and ending about 8 p.m. with the Office of Compline. Please sign up for the suppers on the clipboard in Hawes Hall.
WOMEN OF TRINITY'S COAT DRIVE A HUGE SUCCESS!
The Women of Trinity would like to thank all of the generous donors of coats, jackets, sweaters, winter scarves, hats and blankets to be donated to women and children in Iraq. We collected enough items to fill four large boxes which were mailed on January 17 and should arrive in about two weeks. They will be received by our contact there, former Newport resident Lt. Cmdr. Eric St. Peter who will deliver them to a local charitable institution for distribution. As of this writing, WOT has decided to continue the coat drive for another week, so it may be that a couple more boxes have been sent as well.
We also wish to thank those who have made a monetary contribution to help cover the cost of boxes and shipping, which for the initial shipment totaled $126.00. Anyone still wanting to contribute to those costs may send a check or drop it off at the church office payable to “ Women of Trinity.” Again, we are very grateful for the wonderful support from the parish for this outreach ministry.

Maggie began a regular practice of yoga when she was in her early fifties. She received her 200 hour yoga alliance training at Innerlight Yoga and Meditation Center in Middletown, RI, where she is currently teaching. She also teaches a weekly class at Church of the Epiphany in Rumford.
Maggie has a deep appreciation for the physical benefits of yoga and as an Episcopalian she particularly enjoys practicing yoga as a moving meditation. Maggie brings humor and life experience to her instruction and looks forward to growing together with the Trinity community.
Hello everyone,
In an effort to keep everyone informed and engaged with the financial goings on
here at Trinity, we are going to supply some basic monthly information and
analysis. So that we are all on the same page, let's quickly introduce and
define a key financial assumption.
Key to our discussion is the concept of "Level Funding." Level Funding is a precursor or catalyst to a balanced budget. In order for the Trinity Newport parish to achieve an approximate "Level Funding" we need to receive approximately $36,470.00 each month, because we've targeted and approved (budgeted) to spend this amount. Based upon our first five months of actual receipts, we average approximately $29,210.00 in collections and other receipts (excluding contributions from our endowments). Not a terrible showing, but about $7,260.00 short of the coveted "Level Funding" we should be striving for.
The good news is some of us are really answering the financial pleas of our Stewardship campaign, because our current pledge collections are slightly higher than the comparative five month budget assumption.
Please keep an open mind about your financial commitment to the Trinity
cause. And remember, thru Christ all things are possible.
Keep the Faith !!
GIVING FREEZER: The Women of Trinity (WOT) have established a "giving freezer" that will expand current efforts to provide meals for parish families in need. The goal is to fill the freezer in the Carr-Rice kitchen to two-thirds capacity with casseroles, lasagna, chili, stews, etc. - meals that can be frozen and easily reheated.
WOT will provide containers with lids that will serve 2-3 or 4-6 people. A label, also provided, must be affixed to each container with the name of the dish, ingredients, reheating instructions and number of people it will serve.
After filling the containers, please deliver them to the kitchen in Carr-Rice and place them in the freezer. Be sure to log in your donations on the clipboard that will be on the table in front of the freezer. The best time for deliveries is before or after services on Sunday mornings.
WOT would also welcome monetary contributions to help cover the costs of maintaining this program. Need more info? Please call Meredith Lord (849-4089) or Margot Rous (848-9245).
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TRINITY'S GUIDING PROGRAM
Summer is here, and among other things, that means another season of conducting visitors through our beautiful historic church. We have lost a few of our guides from last year, so are in need of recruiting several more in order to keep our schedule of having the church open May through October for visitors.
No previous experience is required, we simply walk our visitors through the church and informally point out its unique features and history. This is a fine opportunity to learn more about Trinity, get a better understanding of Newport's historic roots, and meet with an always interesting group of people.
If you are interested in participating in this enjoyable and worthwhile Outreach program - whether frequently or occasionally - please call Charlie Jauss at 849-6576.
SOUP KITCHEN NEEDS YOUR HELP: Trinity’s Soup Kitchen needs your help so that we can help others. We are especially looking for people who are willing to buy and cook the meals that we serve on the fourth and fifth Monday evenings each month. This is a vital form of outreach to those most in need within our community and a powerful and very worthwhile way of responding to Christ’s call of ministry to and with the poor and needy.
For the past 18 years, Trinity has served meals as part of the Christian Action Center's meal program. Trinity is responsible for the evening meal on the fourth Monday of each month from September to May, as well as any month with a fifth Monday. One of two teams of volunteers prepares and serves an evening meal to an average of 75 Aquidneck Island residents.
Each team of 6 - 8 is responsible for purchasing the provisions, preparing the meal and serving it in the Great Hall from 5:30 to 7:00. The meal has a set menu, but a team is free to improvise. You can put together a team from Trinity parishioners and/or other interested individuals or groups. Training will be provided.
The commitment is little, as the burden is divided among the teams, but the results are great. Please consider supporting this valuable outreach effort.
To join this important ministry, phone the Church Office for the date you wish to participate. Help is always needed and is greatly appreciated.
From
the earliest times, Christians have paid very special attention to the mortal
remains of human beings. While affirming that our true and eternal home is
in God’s heavenly presence, the Church has also given honor and respect to the
physical remains which have served as the “temple of the Holy Spirit” during our
earthly lives. Beginning with the Catacombs in ancient Rome, and
continuing into our own age, the Church throughout the centuries has set aside
areas in or near their places of worship to inter and mark the physical final
resting places of its members. Trinity Church has a significant example of
this in its historic churchyard. In modern times, it has been increasingly
difficult to continue this custom because of the limited space available today
for the burial of bodies.
In recent years, however, the increasing use of the ancient practice of cremation has opened new possibilities to return to this tradition. Many churches have built or established a columbarium to receive the ashes of its departed members. Several members of our parish have expressed a strong interest in exploring this possibility for Trinity Church.
Given that interest, a Columbarium Committee was established and has been meeting for the past three years to bring the columbarium to reality. Under the guidance of expert architect Madison Spencer, who has most graciously donated his services, the Committee has researched what other churches (particularly historic churches) have done and has prepared three different opportunities for inurnment of ashes.
The first is a traditional columbarium wall, replacing the hedge which currently separates the graveyard from the driveway. The wall will provide space for approximately 70 inurnments and has been approved by the Historic District Commission.
A second opportunity is a tablet vault. There are several of these in the graveyard already. They are no more than eighteen inches tall and have a flat slate top on which information about the interred is carved. A tablet vault can contain either eight or twelve inurnments, depending on which size is selected for construction. The HDC has approved one tablet vault, located near the west wall of the graveyard.
Again copying what is in the graveyard already, the third opportunity is an obelisk. There is room for twelve inurnments, and HDC has approved one obelisk, sited toward the northwest corner of the graveyard.
We hope that all parishioners will come to learn more about these opportunities and consider your own wishes and those of your family members.
